Just found this article. It was published back in October last year.

I’m a sucker for any documentaries about music. The other day when I was posting Rex Huffman’s daily feature – on tap tonight – that suggests what to watch on TV to our website, I saw where “Don’t Stop Believin’: Everyman’s Journey” was airing. It deals with the story of singer Arnel Pineda who became the replacement for Steve Perry of the band Journey.

What is really cool to think about is that if the band had been trying to find a replacement for Perry prior to the technology/social media age Pineda possibly never would have been discovered.

Pineda is from the Philippines and he was discovered because of some videos that were uploaded on YouTube. When Journey decided it wanted to revive the band around 2008 guitarist Neal Schon was trying to find a replacement for Perry who wasn’t interested in continuing with the group. And it wouldn’t be easy because Perry’s voice was a huge part of the band’s success for so many years.

Schon went to YouTube to search for singers who covered their songs but wasn’t having much luck finding the right person. He said he was just about to give up when he clicked on a link with one of Pineda’s performances. He was floored. Check this video out and see if you think Pineda sounds something like Steve Perry. The quality isn’t the best. This video was made when Pineda covered the song “Don’t Stop Believin'” before he was discovered by Schon.
